What is a prediction market?
A prediction market is a live marketplace where people trade on the probability of a real-world event happening. Instead of taking a fixed position like a traditional fixed-odds operator, you're buying shares in that outcome — and the price of those shares reflects what the crowd collectively believes the probability to be.
Think of it like the stock market, except instead of trading company shares, you trade on events like: "Will Super Eagles qualify for AFCON 2026?" or "Will USD/NGN exceed ₦1,700 before December?"
Simple example
A market asks: "Will Arsenal win the Premier League this season?" YES shares are trading at ₦65. That means the crowd believes there is roughly a 65% chance Arsenal wins. If they do win, your ₦65 share pays out ₦100. Your profit is ₦35 per share. If they don't, you lose your ₦65 investment.
Prediction markets have been proven by economists and researchers to be more accurate than traditional polls, expert panels, or even AI models at forecasting real-world outcomes. The reason is simple: people put real money on the line, which forces honest, well-researched positions.
What makes Sabi9ja different from fixed-odds platforms?
Fixed-odds platforms lock your price at the time you place your trade. Sabi9ja is dynamic — prices move continuously based on new information and market activity. You can buy YES on a football match, see new team news, and sell your position for a profit before the match even starts. You are always in control.
No fixed operator prices that are stacked against you
You can sell your position before the event resolves
Prices are driven by real market forces, not a single operator
Markets cover politics, finance, crypto, and entertainment — not just sports
Earn on your knowledge of Nigerian-specific events
How Sabi9ja works
Every question on Sabi9ja is called a market. Each market has a clearly stated resolution criterion — the exact condition that determines whether the outcome is YES or NO. Markets close at a set date and time, after which they resolve based on verified real-world data.
Here's the full lifecycle of a Sabi9ja market:
1
Market creation
Our team or community members propose a market with a clear question, resolution date, and verification source. E.g. 'Will the CBN cut rates before Q3 ends? Resolves YES if CBN announces a rate cut at or before the July MPC meeting. Source: CBN official press release.'
2
Trading opens
Once approved, the market opens for trading. The initial price is set at 50/50, representing equal probability of YES and NO. Early traders can secure the best prices before the crowd moves the market.
3
Prices move in real time
As more people trade, prices shift. Breaking news, poll results, official announcements — all of this moves the market. You can trade at any point between opening and close.
4
Market closes
Trading stops at the specified date. No more buying or selling. The market enters a resolution window.
5
Resolution & payout
Our data team verifies the outcome using the stated source. Winning shares pay ₦100. Losing shares pay ₦0. Payouts hit your Sabi9ja wallet within 24 hours.
How prices move
Sabi9ja uses an automated market maker (AMM) model to ensure there is always liquidity — meaning you can always buy or sell shares, even if no human counterparty is available at that exact moment.
The price of a YES share always represents the market's implied probability of YES (as a percentage). YES price + NO price always equals approximately ₦100, minus a small spread that maintains the market's liquidity pool.
Price mechanics in action
Imagine a market: "Will Dangote Refinery hit full capacity by end of year?" starts at YES ₦50 / NO ₦50. A major investor visits the refinery and shares positive updates. Traders rush to buy YES. The price rises to YES ₦74 / NO ₦26. If you bought at ₦50 and the market hasn't resolved yet, you can sell your YES shares at ₦74 for a ₦24 profit per share — without waiting for the final outcome.
Key price concepts
Implied probability
The YES price divided by 100. A YES price of ₦72 means the market believes there is a 72% chance the event happens.
Spread
The small difference between the buy price and the sell price. This is how Sabi9ja's liquidity pool earns fees to sustain the market.
Liquidity
The total amount invested in a market. Higher liquidity = tighter spread = more accurate prices = better trading for everyone.
Market impact
Large trades move the price more than small trades. Splitting large positions into smaller trades over time reduces impact.

Trading mechanics
When you trade on Sabi9ja, you are doing one of four things: buying YES shares, selling YES shares, buying NO shares, or selling NO shares. Understanding each gives you far more flexibility than a simple "pick a side" model.
Buying
Buying YES means you believe the event will happen. Buying NO means you believe it won't. Both are equally valid strategies — and equally available at all times. You are never locked into only trading on positive outcomes.
Selling (taking profit early)
This is one of the most powerful features of Sabi9ja compared to fixed-odds platforms. If you bought YES at ₦40 and the price has risen to ₦75 due to new information, you can sell your YES shares for ₦75 each — pocketing ₦35 profit per share without waiting for the market to close. A sell can fill against a buyer of the same outcome, or against someone selling the other outcome. This is how experienced traders lock in gains and manage downside risk.
Pro move: sell before resolution
If a market is 3 days away from closing and your position is up 40%, strongly consider selling most of your position to lock in profit. Leave a small amount to "ride" in case the final outcome pays out fully. This strategy significantly reduces variance in your returns.
Position sizing
Never invest more than you can afford to lose on any single market. The most successful Sabi9ja traders diversify across 5–10 markets at any time, with position sizes proportional to their confidence level and the quality of their information edge.
High conviction + strong information edge → up to 20% of bankroll
Medium conviction, some research done → 5–10% of bankroll
Speculative / gut feel → 1–3% of bankroll
Never put more than 50% of your bankroll on a single market
Risk & strategy
Prediction markets reward knowledge, patience, and discipline — not luck. The players who consistently profit on Sabi9ja share common behaviours:
Specialize in what you know
Don't try to trade every market. Pick 2–3 categories you follow closely — maybe you're a forex trader by day and a football fanatic on weekends. Double down there. Your information edge is highest in familiar territory.
Time your entry carefully
Early entry = better prices, but more uncertainty. Late entry = worse prices, but more certainty. The sweet spot is often 24–48 hours before a market closes, when most information is known but prices haven't yet fully adjusted.
Exploit slow market reactions
Nigerians often move social media faster than Sabi9ja prices. If you're first to see a CBN announcement on Twitter and the Sabi9ja market hasn't adjusted yet — that's your edge. Act fast.
Manage your downside
A 50% loss requires a 100% gain to recover. Protecting your bankroll is more important than maximising any single win. Use the sell feature to cut losses when new information contradicts your original thesis.
Follow informed crowds
When a market suddenly moves from 55% to 80% in minutes, something has changed. Look for the underlying news. Either follow the move with fresh analysis, or sell your losing position before it gets worse.
Losses are part of the game
Even the best prediction markets traders win roughly 55–65% of the time. You will have losing positions. What separates profitable traders is how they size their wins vs their losses — not being right 100% of the time.
Payouts & resolution
When a market closes, Sabi9ja's data team verifies the outcome using the specific sources stated in the market's resolution criteria. We do not use social media, unverified reports, or single sources.
Payout structure
Winning shares₦100 per share
Losing shares₦0 per share
Payout timelineWithin 24 hours of resolution
Platform fee2% of amount invested on each trade (win or lose)
Withdrawal to bank1–3 business days after requesting
Minimum withdrawal₦1,000
What if a market can't resolve?
In rare cases — a match abandoned due to weather, an election postponed indefinitely, or an ambiguous outcome — Sabi9ja will void the market and refund all investments in full with zero deductions within 48 hours. This has happened in less than 0.5% of all markets to date.
